About

Mary Prunty - Nutritional Therapist Dublin DipNT, mNTOI.

I studied at the College of Naturopathic Medicine (www.naturopathy.ie) from 2008 to 2011 graduating as a Nutritional Therapist. Naturopathic Nutrition stresses the use of whole and organic foods as medicine. A natural diet is an effective answer to many health complaints and conditions.

I am a member of Nutritional Therapists of Ireland (www.ntoi.ie) which is the regulatory body in Ireland for Nutritional Therapists. It is the only Irish association affiliated with the British Association of Nutritional Therapists (BANT), and shares a common code of ethics and practice. All NTOI members are trained in clinical practice.

They are fully insured and must comply with the British Association of Nutritional Therapists (BANT) and Nutritional Therapists of Ireland (NTOI) requirements for Continuing Professional Development.

I founded Think Nutrition with the goal of making individuals more aware of how to look after their own health and because of gaps I saw in conventional medicine on what we need to know about our diet. Think Nutrition is based in Dublin and consultations are also available in the Midlands.

I regularly attend lectures and seminars to keep me up to date with new scientific nutrition research so I can better help my clients. This is also part of the Continuous Professional Development requirements of Nutritional Therapists of Ireland.

My approach to food and dietary advice is very much an evidence based approach. I believe that food recommendations cannot be made without the backing of large scale studies that have consistently shown the benefits of eating such a food. Evidence based practice is now playing a huge role in nutrition.

Path to Nutrition

I worked in Marketing for a number of years living in Paris, Australia and Ireland before stumbling on the area of nutrition quite by accident. In 2006 I became ill with leaky gut, I had been eating badly, my diet had too much sugar in it and in general I was burning the candle at both ends.  I was prescribed Nexium, Neurontin painkillers and antibiotics including triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori which didn’t really solve the problem.

Finally after consulting many doctors and consultants and clocking up a lot of time and money, I went to a Nutritionist who referred me for laboratory tests to find out what was really wrong. As a result of the leaky gut I was not digesting foods properly and I became intolerant to so many foods. I was also not digesting sugar properly. I embarked on an eating plan to heal my body under the supervision of the Nutritionist. I also took supplements he recommended like probiotics and glutamine to speed up the recovery process as the tests results revealed that my stomach was in a pretty poor state.

My main reason for setting up Think Nutrition was because I felt there were gaps in what I was being told when I was sick and what I should have been told. Conventional medicine I found relied overly on giving me medication and painkillers for my digestive complaint without really figuring out what was causing the problem. In several instances it made my problem worse due to the prescription of antibiotics without any advice on the importance of taking probiotics to protect the lining of the stomach when antibiotics are being taken. It was like a pill for every ill but the pills did not make me better.

I did not take no for an answer in my quest for help which is why I ended up down the road of nutrition to get well. I would now like to empower people to take control of their health and not rely on solely on someone to make you well, your health is also in your own hands. I would also advise not taking no for an answer when you don't feel well. Don't be fobbed off as you know your own body and you know when something is wrong.  I cannot over emphasise the effects that food had on my recovery process and I changed my entire approach towards food. I only wish someone could have told me sooner. It transformed how I felt energy wise, helped me to get well and made me even more interested in pursuing a career in showing how the right foods can help to heal the body.

As a qualified nutritional therapist I can:

  • Explain the basic principles of nutrition and health.
  • Advise and give you support with dietary plans.
  • Look at your specific symptoms to identify a health problem and clearly explain how your diet and lifestyle may be causing your symptoms.
  • Offer advice on healthy eating even if you do not have a health problem to prevent future health problems.
  • Discuss the benefits of lifestyle changes and the management of stress.
  • Show you simple ways to help you manage your weight.
