(Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) – A New IBS Solution

IBS – could it be due to SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) ?

Time and time again doctors may tell you that your IBS is stress related and to go away and manage your stress. This is cold comfort and frustrating if you suffer from this debilitating condition. Doctors will have to start rethinking their approach to this condition based on recent studies.  Researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles have found that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), is caused by small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in the gut and that a test for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) should be the first that doctors use for any patients they suspect has the disease.

SIBO affects up to 60 per cent of IBS patients who regularly suffer from diarrhoea and in 30 per cent of patients overall.  SIBO may certainly be worth further investigation, particularly if bloating is a predominant part of your symptoms.

For more in-depth information on the SIBO theory read: “A New IBS Solution” by Dr Mark Pimental.
